I purchased a Optimus humidifier after reading previous reviews and was optimistic of its performance until I accidentally dropped the 2.5 Gallon container and the impact of its fall shattered the plastic shell. Unfortunately, this is where the advantage of owning the product actually ends. I am not able to order the replacement which means I would have to purchase the entire system similar to the one I have. And which means spending the money one more time. Instead I am going to purchase another humidifier that will enable me to find a replacement if any problems do develop. So much for that. In the mean time, I am going to shop more carefully regardless of the reviews submitted by users.

I previously had a Sears model and chose this because it was the original supplier. It has all of the features I liked from the earlier Sears: overnight capacity, nice water handling, and quiet operation.

Alas, it has the one real pain I did not like about the Sears - the finicky safety switch. This exists on the side of the unit to detect the presence of the water tank before engaging the humidification power. However, one typically has to keep fidgeting with the tank to get the switch to work. On the Sears unit I got so frustrated I simply wired it out of operation.

My old Sears suffered a cracked base and started leaking but only after many hours of service, so I'm willing to give this unit a chance (plus I had leftover filters...). Take the manual's advice and only use distilled water. Mineral buildup can be a real problem to keep at bay if you use tap water.

I purchased this humidifier for my iguana's room, but I keep her door and mine open and it takes care of both rooms nicely. I suffer from really dry skin during the winter months and this humidifier is doing its job well. The only thing; you need to clean the cloth filter at least weekly or more if you have hard water. Really easy maintenance, I suggest you get a few extra filters during purchase, but they will last a while even if you have hard water. Highly recommended:)
